Grammar Stage: Grades K-6
What is the Grammar Stage?
When we think of grammar, we tend to think of the structure of a language: of nouns and verbs and predicate adjectives and complex sentences. And, in a sense, that is what the grammar stage is. Students learn the structure of subjects. They collect the facts that their developing minds will later categorize and make sense of.
All children desire to know. A six-year-old will spend hours telling you of his or her favorite topics: sharks or fairies or dinosaurs or dogs. As young children, they learn quickly and readily. They ask “Why?” repeatedly. Our curriculum supports and encourages this natural curiosity and love for learning. We want our students to gather the knowledge and skills that will later enable them to make connections, to analyze new ideas, and to explain and utilize their knowledge.
Holy Rosary Academy students love exploring Alaska and its resources.

All grades use the Saxon Math curriculum, which provides clear explanations and spiral review to help students retain concepts effectively.
In grades K-3, students learn Saxon Phonics and Spelling, developing phonemic awareness, phonics skills, and fluency. This approach is supported by scientific research and proven effective through years of success at HRA and in our testing results. As a result, our students typically read at least one grade level above their current grade.
The study of Greek myths, ancient history, world history, American history, and geography begins in kindergarten and continues throughout elementary school. Our young scholars engage with these subjects through captivating stories and adventures, which help them develop a strong historical consciousness. Initially, they explore the tales of Greek heroes and the foundations of ancient cultures. As they advance, they delve into the lives of notable Catholic figures from the Middle Ages and significant events and milestones in American and modern history.
Nancy Larson Science teaches a wide range of scientific topics in grades 1-6. Topics include observing rocks and minerals, investigating forces and work, exploring our solar system, examining the structure of plants, and collaboratively building an underwater ROV.
All elementary grades use the Faith and Life Series for religion class. Students learn the stories of the Old and New Testament, prepare for the Sacraments of Confession and the Holy Eucharist, deepen their understanding of the Holy Mass, focus on the Incarnation, and increase their knowledge of not only the basic tenets of the Catholic faith but also its roots in scripture and tradition. Additionally, students attend Mass weekly at Holy Family Old Cathedral, pray daily, and participate in the liturgical traditions.
Students are introduced to great works of literature starting in kindergarten. They encounter fables, nursery rhymes, and myths that form the basis for many cultural references. As they advance, students delve into the timeless writings of great authors such as E.B. White, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Mark Twain, and Shakespeare. Our comprehensive language arts program includes Shurley Grammar, Institute for Excellence in Writing, and penmanship.
Latin is introduced in third grade through a natural approach that includes nursery rhymes, music, and short narratives in Latin. The program also incorporates beautiful art related to Latin.
Additionally, our students participate in various "pull-out" subjects each week, including art, physical education, music, and library.
